Cyrene (Shah'hat) - a UNESCO World Heritage Site

One of the greatest and most beautiful cities not only in North Africa, but also in the entire Hellenic world.  Cyrene is located in the Eastern part of the country around 200 km. east of Benghazi in the heart of Al-Jabel Al-Akhdar (the “"Green Mountains"), which is an extremely beautiful stretch of mountains rich with wild fauna and flora. The drive through the Green Mountains is very scenic with many sites to visit and stop at.

Cyrene is the best example of Greek ruins in Libya. It is famous for colossal monuments such as the Temples of Zeus and Apollo, the Great Baths and its theatre, which is a mixture of Greek and Roman origins. The visual setting at Cyrene is stunning and right behind the center stage the hills fall and offer a dramatic view over the landscape that stretches to the sea.
