Sabratha

The province of Tripolitania is made up of three cities along the coast in ancient Roman times; Leptis Magna, Oea (the Old City of Tripoli) and Sabratha. The Roman city was built around the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. It is a one-hour drive west of Tripoli. When you go there you will see ruins of the theatre, the public baths, temples, fountains and mosaics.

The most memorable part of Sabratha is its massive theatre, a three-story backdrop to its 40-meter wide stage. It seated around 5,000 people.

The present little town of Sabratha grown around the ancient city adds to the charms of the area and is topped with beautiful sandy beaches.
